About Me
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design
East Carolina University 2020
Garrett wants to create effective and aesthetically pleasing work that captures the public’s imagination.
Hailing from the small town of Reidsville, North Carolina, Garrett Whitley has sought to make a career somewhere other than the place he grew up. Not because he did not like where his roots were but because of his desire to seek adventure in a new place. Despite many setbacks, his desire still burns within his chest. Garrett found himself enthralled with the fine arts and its vast history. This was the catalyst for him to seek out a career where his skills as an artist could be applied. He eventually chose graphic design as his career path and enrolled at East Carolina University for its hands-on approach. The act of making products from an idea floating in your brain to physical existence intrigued Garrett. Working diligently Garrett kept his eyes on the future he wanted.
Along the way, Garrett had developed a taste in design. He’s a huge fan of the Bauhaus design movement and how Bauhaus still plays a huge role in today’s design. His brain sparks in confusion and admiration while viewing Wolfgang Wiengart’s use of the grid.
His knowledge of typography has grown exponentially and his friends often call him a “type fiend”. Paying close attention to typography shows the designer is methodical and is aware of the importance of communication. Visual communication should not be ignored though. Without visual communication, our eyes would not know where to focus on information and possibly mistake it for an aesthetic element.
Viewing good design excites Garrett and drives his passion for communicating to the masses through any medium possible. He hopes that he can continue to learn what design can be, and what a successful designer looks like. One that can find pleasure in satisfying a client and not lose his love for design.
